'Sable' Black Cat Paper Clay Sculpture

"Sable" is a hand-sculpted piece with a quiet, watchful presence. Painted in a rich palette of blacks and dark umber with highlights of gold that shift in the light, it has a calm but slightly uncanny character, somewhere between domestic familiarity and something more elusive.

​The form is sculpted in paper clay over a structural armature and mounted on a piece of reclaimed wood, which has been stained and lightly varnished to bring out the grain and warmth of the timber. The contrast between the dark, textured feline form and the deep red-brown wood gives the piece a slightly gothic, folk art feel.
